A page-turner is _Asylum_ by Patrick McGrath. A psychiatrist's wife has an affair with a dangerously insane patient at the mental institution at which her husband works. This book's a fascinating look at the progression of sexual obsession and mental illness. Okay, this one's not for people looking to be cheered up as it's pretty tragic/gloomy/gothic, but I enjoyed it.
