_Dhalgren_ by Samuel R. Delany is a tough book to classify. Although it is a post-apocalypse type of story, it is less science fiction than speculative fiction. A man enters the city of Bellona in which reality is twisted and chaos in the aftermath of an unnamed disaster reigns. In the novel, there are many ways that people cope with the lack of the trappings of an organzied government, from holding onto long-gone "civilized" behavior, to living in a communal structure, to forming gangs loosely following a leader. If you can wrap your mind around the prose, this can be a rewarding,insightful look into humans and the social structures they build. Recommended.
