_Excession_ by Iain M. Banks is another of Banks' science fiction novels involving the Culture, a society dedicated to pleasure. In this novel, the political intrigues and maneuverings of the Culture are revealed when an ambassador is assigned to uncover the mystery of a star older than the universe which disappeared 2500 years ago and has reappeared. As with all of Banks' books, the plot is involved and has many twists and turns. I think this would be good for a fan of Banks' particular brand of SF, but not as an introduction to his work.
