Okay, I'm cheating a bit here; I read _Flowers for Algernon_ by Daniel Keyes back in high school. However, it was one of my favorite books and I realized while going through a bookseller's catalog with a section celebrating banned book month that I didn't own a copy.

Anyhow, this is a story told in the first person about a man with an IQ of 70 who undergoes an operation which rapidly increases his IQ to genius level. Unfortunately, the increase in intelligence is not matched by an increase in emotional intelligence, and at times it is heartwrenching to see him come to grips with a world that he is seeing in a wholly different light. Highly recommended.
