_Glimmering_ by Elizabeth Hand is a beautifully written story of the close of the millenium and possibly the swansong of the human race. A series of events causes a drastic change in the atmosphere of the Earth, plunging the human race into a society that is an odd juxtaposition of those eking out a wild and feral existence and those commanding the last vestiges of the civilization once known.

A magazine editor, Christian rock star and a mysterious girl all cope in their own ways with the dark turn which the human race has taken. The blurb on the cover of the mass market paperback edition compares this book to "The Wasteland" as written by Stephen King, but I think that would be selling it short, as Hand is a far better writer than King. Highly recommended.
