_Gun, With Occasional Music_ by Jonathan Lethem is an odd, avant-garde story of a private "inquisitor" investigating a murder in some future dystopian society where losing karma points lands people a jail sentence or a stint in the deep freeze. Artificial evolution has resulted in a world in which it isn't unusual to be tailed by a talking kangaroo with a gun or have a love affair with a talking sheep. Interesting, if fluffy, story recommended for people looking for an off-the-wall detective story.
